Blackmagic ST 2110: checking the link, NMOS registration and received signal

If an event monitor is not receiving the intended source, record where the path breaks down: Ethernet link, source list or receiver output. This guide uses the sections for the Blackmagic 2110 IP Converter 3x3G and Mini BiDirect 12G with RJ-45, plus the external Videohub Smart Control Pro and Master Control Pro panels. A setup with conference monitors is a test we propose, not a verified GLMedia installation. The final sections add the return path to URSA Broadcast G2 and talkback controls. The SFP model has its own section to distinguish its modes; that selector does not apply to the RJ-45 model.

Identify the equipment and test scope

Record the manufacturer, model and version of the switch, grandmaster and panel. This guide describes the controls of the specified Blackmagic converters; network configuration requires documentation for the installed equipment.

No link: start with port, cable and speed

Record the exact model, port used and speed observed at both ends. Pages 40 and 80–81 of the September 2026 manual describe the Mini BiDirect 12G RJ-45 and 3x3G as converters that can connect directly or through a managed 10G network. The 3x3G specifications, 10G Ethernet Port list 10/100/1000/10G BASE-T; they do not declare 2.5G or 5G. The bandwidth you calculate for a video signal does not establish that a 5G port can negotiate with that equipment.

We propose comparing the affected section with a known working 10G cable and port, off program. Maintain power to each unit and change one element at a time. If the link appears, record what changed and proceed to registration and reception. If it does not, gather the states at both ends before changing routing. A direct connection showing 10G helps narrow down the problem but does not yet establish the setup through the switch.

For the network, pages 24–25 call for a managed switch with IGMPv3 snooping and attention to PTP. This edition’s tested-model table includes Netgear M4300-96X, not M4300-16X. Request configuration, firmware and validation for the model actually installed; do not recommend a purchase merely because it shares the M4300 family.

The panel cannot find the NMOS registry

The March 2025 Videohub Hardware Control manual, page 11 instructs connecting the panel by USB, opening it in Blackmagic Videohub Setup and choosing Control Panel → controller settings → NMOS controller. The options for selecting a Videohub by name or IP apply to Videohub controller mode; check which mode is active before diagnosing an NMOS registry.

In Setup, Network Settings, page 21 allows entering the NMOS Registry IP or selecting auto to discover it. Record the panel IP, mask and gateway, registry address, internal software and the method you tested. Coordinate addresses with the network administrator to avoid conflicts. Save the previous configuration with save config, page 22, before modifying the panel.

The converters have their own setting: Blackmagic Converters Setup → 2110 → NMOS Registry, page 32. Here too, choose automatic discovery or a manual IP. Compare the registry used by the panel and converters. If another application discovers the units and the panel still does not list them, retain both screenshots and versions; do not declare a video fault or incompatibility with every third-party registry. The manual does not provide a specific fix for Master Pro 11.0 with that symptom. Identify the installed version before planning the test.

We propose testing one selection from the receiver and another from the panel with the same source and destination, during a technical break. If receiver selection works, that result narrows the tested path; panel integration still needs review.

Identify the sender and receiver before pressing Take

In Converters Setup, the model appears on the initial screen and Setup reports the internal version, pages 27–28. Record the unit and role: the sender describes what leaves the converter; the receiver selects what enters. For a monitor return, trace SDI source → sender converter → network → receiver converter → SDI to monitor. This is a proposed map to complete with the actual connections.

Pages 29–30 instruct opening the magnifier in the receiver field, choosing the available source and pressing select. The list shows node information and the source label. Check both: similar names may represent different units. On the 3x3G, Inputs labels SDI inputs and Outputs labels outputs, pages 82–83. Also record the physical number and connected receiver; changing a label does not change the wiring.

For Smart Control Pro, configure the buttons before operation. In cut bus, the destination is assigned; in XY, choose destination and then source. Page 13 of the panel manual explains that, with Take enabled, the change waits for confirmation. On Master Control Pro, dest and src select destination and source, and Take confirms, pages 12–13. The Smart Control Pro guide (Spanish) details its button map and settings copy.

Source selected: verify PTP and the receiver output

With an external grandmaster connected to the network, page 31 of the converter manual specifies PTP follower only to prevent a clock conflict. Compare Domain Number with the grandmaster; the manual mentions 127 as common, not mandatory. Check Master and PTP Lock and record the state. If there is no lock, review synchronization configuration with the network lead before calling the route verified. A correct NTP date does not replace this PTP check.

On the 3x3G, pages 81–82 allow selecting Outputs, choosing the SDI output and then the stream with set. Return to preview and select that same output with the numbered button. Page 80 describes double-pressing a numbered button to switch between input/output; the screen icon indicates the mode. If you view the local input while diagnosing an IP return, you may be observing a different signal.

On the Mini BiDirect 12G RJ-45, page 40, IP Input Lock indicates lock to the incoming IP signal; SDI Input Lock applies to the local SDI input. Record which indicator is on. Even with IP Input Lock active, check the SDI output, the format the monitor supports and the audio that destination needs. If the converter shows reception but the monitor remains black, test the output section separately.

ST 2110 separates video, audio and ancillary data; page 25 describes independent routing. We propose checking a recognizable picture, return audio and the data the event requires, plus the return to the initial source. A picture-only test does not establish that audio or tally for that setup is resolved.

Record the tested path and plan the return

Use the blank link, NMOS and reception worksheet. It includes models, versions, ports, registry, source/destination, PTP and monitor observations. Separate the initial state, proposed change and result actually observed. We have not configured units or measured reception, delay or signal continuity.

Save the previous settings and agree on how to return to the program source before the test. For a network with different switches, separate domains or a third-party registry, request its exact documentation; this guide does not provide a universal configuration.

Add the path to the continuity plan and the event recording map. GLMedia’s video processing service lets you review project sources and destinations using that diagram and its requirements.

Camera return: separate picture, tally and voice

Draw the return from production to the camera and record the converter and versions at both ends. Test picture, tally, control and voice separately: one working function does not establish the others.

URSA Broadcast G2: trace the return and compare ATEM Camera ID

To review a camera that sends a picture but does not respond to control, draw the return path too. The September 2026 converter manual, pages 40–42 shows the Mini BiDirect 12G receiving the camera’s SDI output and delivering the SDI return. Identify the exact ATEM, control-side converter, IP route and camera. The camera output to production does not establish that the return with control data reaches the camera.

On URSA Broadcast G2, page 58 of the November 2025 manual uses 12G-SDI In to receive program, tally, talkback and control. Connect the intended return from the Mini’s SDI Out there, following the agreed map. Hold the program button to view the return picture and check that it is the expected source. If it does not appear, follow the receiver and output diagnostics above before modifying IDs.

The Mini BiDirect has ATEM Camera ID in Converters Setup → Setup → SDI Camera Control, page 42. The manufacturer requires it to match the ATEM input number. On URSA Broadcast G2, ATEM Camera ID is in Setup, settings page 3, page 118 of the manual. Record both values and the actual input; the camera name or panel destination does not replace that number.

We propose selecting a camera off program, checking its tally when sent to program and testing an agreed control adjustment, recording the initial state and return. Check camera and converter separately: tally on one does not establish all commands. The ATEM model and firmware must be checked before treating the complete combination as compatible.

Page 118 requires Reference Source set to program for ATEM control, except when the switcher and all cameras use external reference. Page 119 warns that changing reference may cause a momentary interruption. Record the synchronization scheme and review it during preparation; do not change that setting in production to see whether tally appears.

Talkback: separate headphone monitoring from the microphone

The Mini BiDirect 12G RJ-45 uses a headset with microphone on its five-pin XLR, pages 40–42. URSA Broadcast G2 instead provides monitoring and talkback through its 3.5 mm jack, page 57. Identify where the operator is connected. Settings for a headset connected to the Mini are not the camera headset settings.

On the Mini, + and − change monitoring level. To adjust the microphone, hold talk and use + or −. The manual states that double-pressing talk leaves the microphone on until another double press. Audio → Talkback in Converters Setup also separates Headphone level and Microphone level. Record the talk state; raising monitoring does not increase the microphone being sent. Pages 44–45 describe the same controls for Mini BiDirect 12G SFP.

For monitoring on URSA Broadcast G2, Page 119 describes Program Audio Source: switcher prioritizes return audio; AFV prioritizes internal microphones or camera XLR and is the default setting. Program Mix balances camera/program audio with talkback, according to the displayed view. Headset Mic adjusts the microphone and Sidetone Level monitors your own voice. Record which source you want to hear and what the LCD shows before changing the mix.

Test both directions: control speaks and the operator listens; then the operator speaks and control confirms reception. Listen separately to program, recording and return to check each destination. Hearing your own voice through sidetone does not establish that it reached control.

The URSA G2 manual, page 57, places talkback on SDI channels 15 and 16. Ancillary data takes a different path: the converter manual, page 31, describes ST 2110-40. Do not use an audio test as proof of CCU. Integrating an external intercom or changing assignments requires the manuals for the exact ATEM and interface; this section does not define external intercom interface wiring.

Mini BiDirect SFP: check module and mode

The Mini BiDirect 12G SFP section, pages 43–45 distinguishes Ethernet modules from optical SDI modules. In Converters Setup → Setup → SFP Module, SDI Optical applies to the SDI module and Ethernet Optical to the Ethernet module. Record module reference, mode and format at both ends before the test. That selector belongs to the SFP model; the Mini RJ-45 does not have that module.

Page 43 also distinguishes the input indicator: steady when locked to an optical SDI signal and flashing when receiving SMPTE-2110 IP. Do not apply the RJ-45 model’s LED interpretation to this unit. Then observe the return at the receiver; the indicator alone does not verify audio, tally or CCU.

The manual supports the Mini SFP selector. To combine it with Optical Fiber 12G, identify the module, version and documentation of both units; test picture, tally and talkback separately.

Complete the blank return, control and talkback worksheet. Add IDs, reference, monitoring/microphone controls, modules and result for each function. Relate the test to intercom for direction, cameras and stage (Spanish) and camera planning. To review routes and converters, use GLMedia’s video processing service.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start if the 3x3G shows N/C when connected to the switch?

Record port, cable and speed at both ends. We propose comparing with a known working 10G section, changing one element at a time off program. If the link appears, proceed to registration and reception; if not, retain the states before changing NMOS.

Is a 5G port sufficient for the Blackmagic 2110 IP Converter 3x3G?

The specifications list 10/100/1000/10G BASE-T and do not declare 2.5G or 5G. A signal needing less than 5 Gbit/s does not establish compatible negotiation. The manual presents the path with 10G. Check the exact port and signal; a lower-speed link does not establish capacity for the setup.

Does the tested-equipment list include Netgear M4300-16X?

The September 2026 edition lists M4300-96X among tested models; it does not list M4300-16X. Retain that distinction and request documentation for the installed model and firmware.

Where do I select NMOS on a Videohub Smart Control Pro?

Open the panel by USB in Blackmagic Videohub Setup. Under Control Panel → controller settings choose NMOS controller. Then check NMOS Registry in Setup: manual IP or auto, according to the March 2025 manual. Configure and check the Smart’s buttons; selecting the mode alone does not verify a route.

Which NMOS registry should I check if converters appear in another application but not on the panel?

Compare the registry selected on the panel and in Converters Setup → 2110, along with IP, mask, gateway and versions. Save screenshots of the units each application shows. We propose testing the same route from receiver and panel to narrow down the problem. This guide does not establish a specific fix for Master Control Pro 11.0; record the installed version before the test.

How do I select the IP return for a 3x3G SDI output?

In Outputs, select the SDI output with set, choose the available stream and confirm. Return to preview and display that same output with the numbered button. A double press switches input/output; check the mode icon. Then check the monitor connected to that BNC and its audio.

Does IP Input Lock on the Mini BiDirect 12G confirm that the monitor receives the return?

It confirms lock to the incoming IP signal according to page 40. SDI Input Lock indicates the local SDI input. To complete the test, check SDI Out, cable, format and the signal on the monitor. Record picture and audio separately: the LED does not describe the entire downstream path.

Should I leave Domain Number at 127 if PTP Lock does not appear?

Compare the domain with the actual grandmaster. The manual cites 127 as common but permits another value. With an external grandmaster, it specifies PTP follower only on the converters. Record Master, Domain Number and PTP Lock; a number copied from another setup does not establish synchronization.

Where does the Mini BiDirect return enter a URSA Broadcast G2?

From the Mini’s SDI Out to 12G-SDI In on the URSA G2, following the agreed diagram. Page 58 allows holding program to view the return. Check that picture first, then tally, control and talkback. The picture sent by the camera does not establish the return path.

Which ID should I check if there is a return but tally or control does not respond?

Record the actual ATEM input and compare it with ATEM Camera ID on the Mini, under Setup → SDI Camera Control, and on URSA G2, in Setup page 3. The Mini manual requires matching the input. We then propose testing tally and a control adjustment separately, off program and with the exact ATEM documented.

Should I change Reference Source during the show to test URSA G2 control?

Make that change during preparation. Page 119 warns of a momentary output interruption. Page 118 specifies program for ATEM control, except when switcher and cameras use external reference. Record the scheme and agree on the setting before the test.

Why does raising the Mini BiDirect headphone level not improve my voice at control?

Monitoring and microphone have different levels. + and − adjust the headphones; holding talk and using those buttons adjusts the microphone. Audio → Talkback also has separate controls. We propose verifying that control receives the voice before considering the level set.

How do I avoid leaving the Mini microphone open after testing talkback?

The manual says double-pressing talk keeps the microphone on until another double press. Record the initial state and return to the agreed state after testing. Confirm with control that it has stopped receiving voice; hearing sidetone does not establish transmission or closure.

What should I check if I hear camera audio instead of the return in URSA G2 headphones?

In Setup page 4, review Program Audio Source: switcher prioritizes return, and AFV camera microphones/XLR. Also check the LCD view and Program Mix; Headset Mic and Sidetone Level serve other functions. We propose listening to program and talkback separately before checking both communication directions.

Are SDI Optical and Ethernet Optical interchangeable on Mini BiDirect SFP?

Choose the mode matching the installed module. Page 45 distinguishes SDI Optical for an SDI module and Ethernet Optical for Ethernet. Record module, format and equipment at the other end. The selector belongs to the SFP model; it does not apply to the Mini RJ-45 or establish compatibility with every converter.

Does working tally also verify talkback?

No. Test voice in both directions, program and control data separately. Tally arriving verifies only that path.
