Videohub 40x40 12G: Setup, labels, layouts and macros

If Videohub Control lets you route signals but Setup will not let you edit labels, start with the selected unit and connection. When preparing a conference configuration or a room change, also record labels, buttons and routes: they are saved and checked in different ways. This guide applies the Videohub 12G family sections to the Blackmagic Videohub 40x40 12G.

Identify the Videohub unit, version and configuration

Check administration permissions, the USB data cable and detection from another compatible computer. Record versions; a detection failure alone does not prove that the USB port is faulty.

For the technical steps, we use the May 2025 Videohub manual without treating the suggested version or power-off duration as manufacturer instructions.

Control works, but Setup will not let you edit labels

Control lets you view and change connections between sources and destinations, as described on page 32 of the manual. Setup manages labels and other settings. A route changing demonstrates that operation at the destination checked; it does not demonstrate that configuration changes over Ethernet are enabled.

In Setup, check Network Settings and Allow utility administration. The explanation on page 30 states that via USB limits changes to the computer connected by USB. If that restriction is the agreed arrangement for the event, you can keep it and administer the unit through that connection. There is no need to expand network access to check it.

The access procedure on page 25 starts by connecting USB and opening Blackmagic Videohub Setup. Select the correct unit on the opening screen and its settings icon. We suggest checking detection with a known data cable connected directly to the computer; if the unit does not appear, record the cable, port, system and version used before trying another combination.

If Setup detects the unit by USB and allows editing, note the difference from Ethernet. If it still does not allow editing or does not detect the unit, the permission alone does not explain the entire symptom. Save screenshots and consult support with those details; changing three cables without checking their data capability is not enough to conclude that the router’s connector is damaged.

Record versions before repeating an update

The section on page 29, Setup Tab, shows the internal software version for comparison with the manufacturer’s support center. Record that value and, separately, the version of the Videohub package installed on the computer and its operating system. If you cannot open the settings, record that the information is missing instead of calling it up to date.

Save the full notice, when it appears and which unit was selected. If an update has already taken place, record whether it reached the completion message and what Setup showed when reopened. A successful ping and a working route are useful data, but they do not identify the cause of the notice.

That is why we do not recommend installing 11+ as a cure or repeating updates in succession. We suggest collecting the record and comparing it with the documentation for the relevant package; if the notice persists, send it to support through the channel agreed by the technical lead.

Documented update procedure and off-air preparation

The section on page 31, Updating your Videohub, instructs you to connect USB, open Setup and select the router. If the utility reports that an update is needed, you can start with Update and finish with Close. Do not disconnect the Videohub during installation. The section does not document a 60-second power interruption as a remedy for a recurring notice.

Before taking action, agree on a pause, identify which destinations depend on the router and record the starting routes and settings. Preserve labels and document the macros in use separately. This is preparation we propose for the setup; we have not performed an update or tested a return to program.

After an agreed intervention, check detection in Setup and the status of the labels. Off air, check a test route and then the intended destinations using an identifiable image and the expected audio. Record observations and leave a final map; do not declare the problem resolved just because the update window closed.

What a factory reset erases

The section on page 30, Reset, warns that it deletes all assigned macros and labels and returns the unit to factory settings. Given that scope, we do not propose it as the first step to restore name editing or as a confirmed solution for the recurring notice.

To save labels, page 26 documents save label set in the Inputs or Outputs gear menu, and load label set to load them. That file is a label set; do not present it as a complete backup of routes, macros and configuration. If Setup will not let you save it, document that limitation and record the names by another means before considering an intervention.

If a reset is chosen, the person responsible must prepare to rebuild the configuration and check each destination off air. If there is no adequate copy or record, first work out how to restore the state needed for the event.

Diagnostic worksheet and related content

Includes versions, connections, messages, label backups and starting and final routes. Use the blank Setup and USB worksheet to record the manufacturer’s setting and the test result.

The Videohub Mini 4x2 12G (Spanish) has different controls and paths: that guide remains separate from administration of the 40x40. Link the recording destinations to the continuity plan. To prepare the map and intervention, consult GLMedia’s video processing and distribution service.

To record restoration of the map, complete the labels, layouts and macros worksheet. The following sections distinguish each file or setting and propose how to check it at the receivers before resuming the event.

Restore labels and check the signal path separately

For the equipment covered by this guide, page 26 of the manual, May 2025 describes save label set in the Inputs or Outputs gear menu. Use a name that identifies the event and date, choose the folder and save a copy. To restore those names, use load label set, select the file and open it. If you need to edit names, the manufacturer allows this in the label set’s text file.

After loading it, compare the destination’s port number, name and cable. We suggest starting with an off-air monitor and an identifiable source, then continuing with the destinations that will be used. If the name matches but a different signal arrives, record the source actually received: restoring labels does not replace checking routes or explain a memory fault on its own.

For panel shortcuts, keep button names consistent with input or output names. Page 26 notes that the filter is case-sensitive; page 29 describes button mapping. If a source is missing when filtering, compare its label and the shortcut text before changing a route. This check applies to the 12G family panel; it is not inferred from symptoms on older equipment.

Save Layout restores Control buttons, not a room routing preset

The section on page 34 of the current manual defines Save Layout and Load Layout as saving and loading custom Videohub Control button layouts. To return to a group of routes, prepare the macro or source and destination selection; do not rely on Load Layout as a routing restoration command.

Before saving the layout, select the correct router and review the buttons the operator will use. In edit buttons, Edit lets you check the source or destination assigned to a button and its icon, according to page 35. If two layouts use similar graphics, the room name and port map help identify what is being operated.

Keep the previous layout and save the new one under a different name. We suggest loading it off air and checking its assignments before touching a source. Then select a destination to see which input is associated with it and check that signal at the receiver. An icon or position changing is not evidence of a route change.

Reset All in the Control menu, on page 34, displays inputs and outputs again and replaces custom icons; it retains the source, destination and deck control assignments described there. It is different from Setup’s Factory Reset, which erases macros and labels. Identify the application and full command before using it.

Prepare a macro to change a group of routes

For the integrated panel of the 12G family, check macros against page 28 of the manual. Identify the panel before applying instructions from another controller.

In Setup, open Control Panel and check number of macros: moving the slider adds or removes macro buttons. In button mapping, select a white button. Rows A through P represent routing actions; choose the source and destination for each row you need and save with save. Record those pairs before running them, including the starting state to return to.

For a room change, one proposed example is to assign two sources from that room to two outputs feeding the switcher. Use the actual wiring numbers, not names from a previous project. The manual describes several simultaneous route changes with a macro; it does not present them as a sequence with delays or a synchronized video transition.

The panel procedure calls for pressing the macro button and then take to confirm. Rehearse off air and check every included output. In Control, use take is a separate confirmation option for software changes, documented on page 36: do not substitute the application procedure for the panel macro procedure.

Check the restored map before returning to program

Complete the recovery worksheet with the unit, versions, label file, layout, each macro’s rows and the source received at each output. The record is blank; we have not loaded files, changed routes or run macros on a router. The following check is a proposal for the setup.

First review files and assignments without changing a program route. Then, during an agreed pause, test an off-air destination and the macro group. View an identifiable image and listen for the expected audio at the receivers. If an output does not match, preserve evidence and compare the port, programmed action and destination lock; do not unlock a protected route without coordinating with its operator.

Note what changed and what stayed the same. Also test returning to the initial map using the recorded routes or a return macro you have prepared and checked. Close the test with the agreed final map, copies of the files and outstanding items that still prevent a destination from being considered ready.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I route with Videohub Control but not edit labels in Setup for the 40x40 12G?

Check Allow utility administration and how the computer is connected. With via USB, the manual restricts changes to the computer connected by USB, even if Control allows routing over the network. Connect USB, open Setup and select the unit; record whether it appears and the fields become available. If nothing changes, save that result to continue diagnosis.

Do I need to enable Ethernet administration to change labels?

You can keep via USB and edit from the computer connected by USB. The manual documents that restriction to prevent accidental network changes. Check that path first; any decision about Ethernet administration depends on the access arrangement agreed for the event.

How do I test the USB connection if Setup does not detect the Videohub 40x40 12G?

We suggest using a cable with verified data transfer, connected directly to the computer, and opening Blackmagic Videohub Setup. Record the cable, port, system and version; then change just one variable, such as the cable or computer, and observe whether the unit appears. This is a proposed test for the setup, not a test performed by GLMedia or a fault diagnosis.

What should I record if Setup requests another update after completion?

Save the full message, selected unit, computer package version and internal version shown by Setup. Record whether installation reached completion and what happened when it was reopened.

What does the manufacturer specify for updating Videohub?

Page 31 of the May 2025 manual instructs you to connect USB, open Setup, select the unit and press Update if the utility requires an update. Wait for completion and use Close. Do not disconnect the router during installation. Prepare the pause and setup record before taking action.

Is turning the router off for 60 seconds a confirmed solution for the recurring notice?

The update section consulted does not document it and calls for keeping the router connected during installation.

What should I prepare before a factory reset on a Videohub 40x40?

The manual warns that the reset erases macros and labels and restores factory settings. Save the configuration record, prepare how to rebuild it and rehearse off air before considering that operation.

Does save label set also save Videohub routes and macros?

The procedure on page 26 saves a label set. Record routes, macros and other settings separately; do not count that file as a complete router backup. After loading labels, check the actual signal at the receivers: restoring a name does not confirm the connection received by that destination.

How do I restore input and output names on a Videohub 40x40 12G?

In Setup’s Inputs or Outputs, open the gear menu and choose load label set; select the saved label set and open it. Page 26 documents that procedure. Then compare port numbers, names and cables and check the signal at a test destination. If names are missing or the file belongs to another event, resolve that difference before routing.

Does an old label after restarting prove that the 40x40’s memory has failed?

That symptom alone does not identify the cause. Save screenshots, versions and the label set; compare names, port numbers and actual signal before taking action on a 40x40 12G. Do not remove the reference without reviewing its function in this model and the actual arrangement.

Does Videohub Control’s Load Layout restore a room’s routes?

Page 34 documents it as loading the custom Control button layout. To restore routes, prepare the macro or source and destination selection and check each receiver. When loading a layout, check which port each button represents; do not use it as a complete configuration backup.

Does Control’s Reset All do the same thing as Setup’s Factory Reset?

They have different scopes. Control’s Reset All shows inputs and outputs and restores default icons; the manual retains the button assignments described in that section. Setup’s Factory Reset erases macros and labels and restores factory settings. Read the command and application before deciding what you need to restore.

How do I prepare a panel macro to change several routes on a Videohub 40x40 12G?

In Setup, open Control Panel, add the button with number of macros and select it in button mapping. Choose the source and destination in the required rows from A through P and save with save. The manual calls for pressing the macro on the panel and then take. Record the pairs and rehearse each output off air; we have not tested that set yet.

Does a routing macro guarantee a seamless change and a return to the previous routes?

The manual describes several simultaneous routes without promising a synchronized transition or an automatic return to the previous map. Record the initial state and prepare how to restore it. Test the change and return with the event’s sources and receivers, checking image and audio at each output; document what remains unverified.
