Lighting and control
No response, flicker or unexpected behavior
Isolate power, configuration and signal using reversible, recorded checks.
Ask GLMedia about a lighting rental solution for your event, subject to availability and technical requirements.
Using this guide
Identify which unit fails, when, and whether the defect appears by eye or only on camera. Not all flicker originates in DMX.
Prepare your rental inquiry
- Date, city, venue and setup, event and pickup schedule.
- Intended use, area dimensions and equipment already supplied by the venue or production.
- Visual goal and problem to solve; venue plan or identified photos if available.
- Decisions already agreed with venue, production and video to assess a suitable solution.
Specify equipment only or whether setup, programming, operation and strike are also needed. Scope is confirmed in the proposal.
You do not need a final equipment list: tell us the result you want and the part you need help with. Availability and scope are confirmed in the proposal.
Features and connections
A local test compares the fixture with its control path; a short-cable test reduces variables without proving which component is broken.
Prepare the system
- Save show and settings; check label power and visible damage. Remove from service for odor, overheating or repeated protection trips.
- Confirm blackout, dimmer, shutter, personality, address and universe; record sent value and expected manual function.
- Test locally, then directly from the source with a known cable. Add sections, splitter and radio individually; record where the symptom returns.
Questions and troubleshooting
Is data present but there is no light?
Check output conditions for the selected mode.
- Isolate dimmer, color and open shutter; avoid macros, reset and lamp control during diagnosis.
- If local operation works, inspect patch and path; if not, check fixture restrictions and errors.
Does it flicker intermittently?
Compare a short path with the full installation.
- Check DMX cable, termination and absence of passive branches; replace one component at a time.
- Where appropriate, temporarily test with RDM disabled on the affected output and record the change. Improvement guides investigation without proving RDM faulty.
Does it look wrong only on recordings?
Separate camera flicker from data failure.
- Hold a stable scene and record camera, shutter, level and source reproducing the defect.
- Test supported fixture frequency settings with video; do not change patch to fix camera bands without evidence.
Precautions
- Do not begin with a factory reset or update; retain a recoverable configuration.
- Do not bypass protection, ground or sensors. Internal service requires authorized personnel.
- Before returning to the show, repeat the affected scene and planned recovery; do not claim repair from an isolated check.
Terms on this page
- DMX
- A data protocol controlling lighting functions; each model defines what its channels mean.
- RDM
- Management communication for querying or configuring compatible equipment over a compatible path.
- Patch
- Assignment of fixture, profile, address and universe in the control system.
- Personality
- A control mode defining the channels and functions used by a fixture.
