Staging Concepts SC90: deck, supports and setup checks

Identify the plywood SC90 platform, distinguish its deck rating from the complete stage, and prepare supports, joints and protected outdoor use.

Identify the platform

Ask GLMedia about rental options for your event. The proposal is subject to availability, confirmation of the model and configuration, and the venue’s technical requirements.

This guide covers the single-sided Staging Concepts SC90® Platform with a plywood substrate, documented today by Sightline Commercial Solutions. It does not cover SC90 Composite, Clarity or Clima-Core. The 4 × 8 ft (1.22 × 2.44 m) deck is one size option; confirm the actual deck, surface and revision supplied.

For a conference, awards presentation or panel, modular decks can provide the planned raised floor when a documented support and access system completes the design. Start with usable floor area, furniture, circulation and access. The deck name alone does not define a stage that is ready for use.

What the published specifications cover

Platform
Single-sided plywood deck; supports specified separately.
Reference footprint
4 × 8 ft (1.22 × 2.44 m); confirm each module.
Construction
4 in (101.6 mm) aluminum frame; 1 in (25.4 mm) plywood substrate. Frame depth is not finished stage height.
Deck joints
Built-in Roto-Lock system; use the instructions for the supplied configuration.

The current platform sheet publishes 150 lb/ft² of uniformly distributed live load. This is a deck specification, not approval of point loads, caster loads or a complete stage. Confirm the rating and revision of the actual units, the support arrangement and the project loads. Do not assign this value to an older SC90 solely from its name.

Deck, supports and accessories

The platform forms the floor. Legs or a documented support system carry it. The manufacturer’s SC90 Leg Supports sheet describes fixed and adjustable legs: the leg fits a platform pocket and is retained by a 3/8 in (10 mm) eye bolt; an adjustable leg also uses a fast pin. Roto-Lock deck joints, leg retention and bracing perform different jobs.

For the documented 24–36 in (610–914 mm) adjustable-leg range, the manufacturer requires bracing. This is not a universal bracing layout or permission to omit bracing at other heights. Select leg references, braces and clamps from the instructions and layout for the actual assembly.

Guardrails, stairs, ramps, chair stops, closure panels and skirting are separate decisions. Specify attachment, edge protection and access for the use and location. Similar dimensions do not prove compatibility with another deck or support family. Skirting does not replace structural bracing or edge protection.

Prepare the configuration

  1. Record deck identification, size and surface, support references, intended finished height and all accessories. Obtain the supplier’s assembly instructions and the approved layout; do not improvise fasteners or tightening values.
  2. Mark furniture, people, equipment and movement routes on the layout. Have concentrated loads and any rolling equipment assessed for that assembly before use; spreading a total weight across floor area does not resolve a point load.
  3. Check the site’s floor or ground, bearing conditions, level changes and access. Grass, slopes, ramps and outdoor exposure require project-specific documentation and the applicable local requirements.
  4. With the area unloaded and isolated, compare components and their condition with the documentation. After assembly, arrange the required inspection and handover before opening the stage.

Three technical questions

Two decks do not align or the Roto-Lock will not close. What should I check?

Keep the affected area unloaded and out of use. Check module identity, orientation, edge condition, debris and whether the supports match the documented layout. Compare joint positions and finished levels before trying the connection again.

Do not force a lock, pull decks together with improvised hardware or adjust supports while the stage is occupied. If the mismatch remains, have the supplier identify the joint and support configuration. A closed deck joint does not demonstrate adequate support or a permitted load.

Can I place a piano, equipment rack or wheeled item on a deck rated at 150 lb/ft²?

The published number describes uniformly distributed live load. A foot, small base or caster concentrates force, and movement changes the loading case. Record the item’s weight, contact points, positions and planned travel path; send those details with the actual deck and support layout for review.

Do not turn the published number into a total payload allowance, a per-leg capacity or a caster limit. Do not perform a trial load to establish a rating. If the concentrated or rolling load is not documented for that assembly, keep it off the stage until the configuration is resolved.

Can the plywood SC90 stay outside if it has a dark surface?

Surface appearance does not establish weather suitability. The current plywood SC90 sheet limits outdoor use to temporary installations protected from rainfall and direct sunlight; it recommends indoor, temperature-controlled storage when not in use.

Before installation, confirm how that protection will be maintained and what conditions require the area to close. If exposure cannot be controlled, request a documented alternative for the project. Adding a roof introduces a separate structure and weather plan; it does not automatically authorize the stage, supports or ground conditions.

Before anyone uses the stage

Stop use if there is movement, a gap, damage, missing retention or an undocumented change. Isolate the area and refer it to the responsible supplier or competent person; do not straighten, drill or modify components as a generic fix.

The deck sheet is not an assembly manual or a structural sign-off. Verify support and accessory instructions, edge protection, access, ground conditions and any required project review. A rolling riser, camera platform or LED ground support needs its own documented configuration.
