Sony HXC-FB80: HD camera, CCU and video outputs

Ask GLMedia about rental options for an event camera system. We review availability, configuration, and alternatives for your event.

Model and scope

With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.

HXC-FB80 is an HD system camera with three 2/3-inch Exmor CMOS sensors. It supports multicamera production with a suitable lens, viewfinder, control system and signal path.

Capture is HD. The HXCU-FB80 can upscale the signal to 4K; this does not make the camera head a native 4K capture camera. Packages and connectors vary: check camera, CCU, lens and accessory labels before configuration.

Camera head, CCU and signal

Camera head
SDI output can carry the main signal, viewfinder or return depending on menu settings. SDI IN/OUT also has configurable functions: verify the port label and assignment, rather than relying on connector type alone.
CCU
On HXCU-FB80, SLOT1 provides HD/SD outputs. SLOT2 supports 4K, 3G or HD modes depending on configuration: 4K over 12G uses the designated ports, while quad 3G uses all four links. These are not four independent 12G outputs.
Reference and fiber
The CCU reference input accepts documented tri-level or black burst signals. Match the N/L variant and fiber system; a normal optical indicator does not establish video format compatibility with the receiver.

System requirements

Compatible camera head, lens and viewfinder; an HXCU-FB80 when its upscaling and distribution functions are required. Do not assume another CCU has these functions because it also uses fiber.

Cables and optical connections for the exact system, approved power and a receiver compatible with the selected resolution, frame rate and SDI transport. Distance depends on the manufacturer’s cable, power and configuration requirements.

For HD HDR HLG with this combination, the manual requires camera and HXCU-FB80 software version 1.10 or later. Check both versions and the complete signal path; the product name alone does not establish HDR support.

Basic preparation

  1. Record suffixes, versions, lens, CCU and receiver. Connect and power the system according to its manuals; do not interchange optical connectors from different variants.
  2. Choose the system frequency and format for the receiver. With the CCU connected, the camera follows the CCU system setting; in standalone use, check OUTPUT FORMAT on the camera.
  3. On the HXCU-FB80, select the SLOT2 mode and verify ports, link count and supported mapping. An HD receiver may not accept an output configured for 4K.
  4. Check main signal, bars, return and character overlay before handing off program. Confirm the image on a known receiver that supports the selected format.
  5. For HDR, verify software 1.10 or later on both units and identify which output carries HDR. Agree on signal interpretation at the receiver before adjusting color.

Three technical questions

Why is the CCU linked but the switcher has no picture?

Camera link status and the receiver’s acceptance of SDI are separate checks. Record the output port, format and frame rate, then compare them with the switcher input.

On HXCU-FB80, distinguish SLOT1 from SLOT2 and check whether the latter is set to 4K/12G, 4K/3G or 2K/3G. The 4K/3G and 2K/3G modes are not output simultaneously. Check a known compatible path without changing several variables at once.

Is the HXCU-FB80’s 4K signal native 4K camera capture?

It is an upscale of the HXC-FB80’s HD signal in the CCU. When preparing a system, distinguish capture resolution, processing and output format.

Confirm whether the receiver needs a single 12G link or four 3G links and which mapping it accepts. A single link from a quad output does not carry the complete picture.

Why does the monitor show bars, return or something other than program?

Check signal mode and SDI OUT assignment, as well as bars and characters. The manual allows MAIN, VF and RET among other selections; they do not all represent a clean program feed.

With HDR, MAIN can output HD HDR while other selections output HD SDR; SD/VBS is unavailable in that mode. Separate signal selection, format and receiver processing before treating it as a camera fault.

Limits and precautions

Do not apply an HXCU-FB70 or another camera configuration as an equivalent. Preserve settings and versions before changing the system.

Do not look into optical connectors or work on energized fiber. Follow the manufacturer’s disconnection, cleaning and inspection procedure; refer damage or persistent warnings to qualified service.

Fiber distance and power depend on the exact system. Camera head local power and the CCU AC input are separate circuits. Do not improvise adapters.
