Sony FR7: lens, control, and auto framing

Ask GLMedia about rental options for an event camera system. We review availability, configuration, and alternatives for your event.

Model and use

With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.

The Sony ILME-FR7 is a full-frame Cinema Line camera with interchangeable E-mount optics and remote movement. This guide covers the body and FR7K kit; identify the installed lens to plan framing and functions.

A lens that mounts does not by itself establish remote zoom, autofocus, or PTZ movement compatibility. Check Sony’s functional information for the exact combination.

Video, audio, and control

Picture and sound
The camera provides SDI, HDMI, and IP streaming. Identify the switcher output path and where audio, color, and synchronization will be checked; control video does not verify every destination.
Zoom and lens
Remote optical zoom requires a compatible power zoom lens. With a prime or manual zoom lens, Clear Image Zoom can magnify through processing; it does not optically move that lens.
Control and power
RM-IP500 connects over LAN. The FR7 uses SETUP 3 ON to enable VISCA over IP at the next power-on. PoE++ requires IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8.

What to prepare

Record lens model and camera, lens, and controller versions. Prepare support, power, switcher signal, and recording or tracking needs.

Share approximate distances and required shots. A sketch lets us help map optics and connections before final positions or schedules are settled.

Basic preparation

  1. Check lens compatibility and mounting against exact documentation. Prepare the assembly and clear cables and travel before enabling movement.
  2. Complete initial Web App setup. For RM-IP500, check SETUP 3, startup, shared network, and camera assignment using the controller manual.
  3. In Technical > Zoom > Zoom Type, choose Optical Zoom Only or On(Clear Image Zoom) for the shot. Rehearse start, stop, and speed with the actual lens.
  4. For PTZ Auto Framing, HDMI must not exceed 1920×1080. With RTSP, Codec 2 must be Off; with NDI|HX, Frame Rate 2 must be 10fps or lower.
  5. PoE++ does not allow recording and PTZ Auto Framing simultaneously. If both are needed, prepare the supplied adaptor and verify the system before the event.
  6. Configure auto framing start and detection, then rehearse subject loss and recovery. Review those settings after changing lenses or modes affecting framing.

Three technical questions

Why does the camera move but not optically zoom?

Identify the lens and its operating mode. Attaching a prime or manual zoom lens does not turn it into a power zoom lens.

Check Zoom Type and functional compatibility. Actual speed and accuracy vary by lens; rehearse the entire transition before using it on air.

What should I check if auto framing cannot be enabled?

Check lens communication, HDMI format, streaming, and power against the listed conditions. Exit playback, thumbnails, or lens calibration before enabling it.

Check subject and start mode; rehearse with correct exposure and focus. Do not transfer curves or settings from another PTZ family without confirming they exist for the FR7.

How can I separate control delay from picture delay?

Compare physical movement response with destination video and record controller, protocol, firmware, and signal path. A delay seen on a monitor does not identify its source.

Rehearse the planned system, including speeds and presets. Preserve configuration before changing versions; avoid a reset as the first diagnostic step.

Limits and precautions

Use the supplied adaptor and follow power documentation. Do not connect the AC adaptor simultaneously with PoE++ soft authentication using LLDP enabled.

Follow the exact assembly documentation for mounting, lens support, and balance. Do not force the head or infer capacity from a similar mount.

Check firmware and rehearse with the actual lens. Compatibility or a firmware improvement does not guarantee the smoothness, tracking, or latency required by a shot.

Official documentation

Accessed October 22, 2026. Support lists firmware 4.00; verify installed versions and the actual lens before applying settings.
