This guide covers the EW-D handheld set. A matching appearance does not establish the same tuning range.

Connections and required equipment

The receiver audio output feeds a console input. Smart Assist control and the radio link are separate checks.

Prepare the system

  1. Identify both tuning ranges and the coordinated frequency plan.
  2. With transmitters off, scan according to the system plan and manual.
  3. Lower the console channel before pairing and checking audio.

Questions and troubleshooting

Why will a replacement handheld not sync?

Compare the frequency-range labels first.

  1. Confirm receiver and transmitter have the same range.
  2. Record the exact error and firmware; do not assume another family or band is interchangeable.
  3. If labels differ, stop the pairing attempt and obtain a documented compatible unit; do not force frequencies through the app. If labels match but sync fails, retain both model/band/firmware details and the exact message for Sennheiser support.
How do I distinguish sync from update mode?

Use the documented physical controls.

  1. Briefly press receiver SYNC, then transmitter SYNC.
  2. Keep each press under two seconds; verify green LINK rather than holding the button.
  3. If physical sync produces LINK but the app still fails, the radio link works while the app/control issue remains separate. Verify receiver audio and destination at controlled level; do not repeat long presses or update a working system as a test.
LINK is green: why is there no sound?

A radio link does not validate the audio path.

  1. Check handheld mute, power and receiver audio indication.
  2. Trace receiver output, console input assignment and channel mute at controlled level.
  3. If receiver audio responds but the console meter does not, the next comparison is its output/cable and console patch. If the console meter responds, follow its bus/output. Verify speech at the intended destination; persistent failure with a known-good path requires support.
