Radial JS2: split a microphone for room and recording
Choose direct and isolated destinations and assign microphone power responsibility.
Ask about rental, purchase or integration
Tell us the use, date and venue, even with an approximate brief. We can assess equipment, integration, preparation and technical support. Configuration, availability and terms are confirmed in the proposal.
Case 27: one source, multiple destinations
JS2 is a passive mic-level splitter with one transformer-isolated and two direct outputs, not three isolated outputs. JS3 is a different model. Each destination preamp receives the same source for its own mix; the splitter is not a stereo mixer, recorder or backup microphone.
Proposed example: microphone to INPUT, DIRECT-1 to room preamp, ISOLATED to recording/broadcast preamp. Identify the second direct output if used; it does not gain JS3 isolation. A finished program may only need a mixer feed; remixing voices calls for per-source splits and enough recording inputs.
Case 28: phantom and split preparation
- Label source, output and mixer at each end. Radial identifies DIRECT-1 as the phantom return path to the mic. Agree one responsible power source and other-destination settings before connecting. Do not expect the isolated output to power the mic.
- Protect outputs and lower levels. Confirm microphone type/power; JS2 needs no supply. Check speech at each preamp and set gains separately. A mic feed needs a suitable preamp, not a line input selected by connector shape.
- If removing the room mixer silences a condenser, check whether DIRECT-1 lost its responsible power source. Plan handover off-program; do not toggle phantom as a live test. For hum inspect paths and documented audio ground lift while retaining protective earth.
Discuss distribution and operation
Compare identified analog isolation, supported digital sharing with shared preamp control or a mix feed. Start with date, venue and approximate sources/destinations to scope rental, purchase, cabling, preparation and operation. Rehearse all destinations and the procedure for removing a mixer before the event.
More setup questions
Are all JS2 outputs isolated?
No. One output is transformer-isolated and two are direct. Choose destinations and isolation needs before connecting.
Who powers a phantom microphone?
Radial documents DIRECT-1 as the phantom return path. Assign the responsible preamp; the isolated output does not replace that path.
