Panasonic AW-UE160: signals, control and LED backdrops

Model and scope
With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.
Panasonic AW-UE160 is a PTZ camera with a one-inch MOS sensor, motorized optical zoom and phase-detection autofocus. It supports multicamera production, stages, studios and streaming.
This guide uses the North American AW-UE160WP/KP as its regional basis: W denotes white and K black. Check the actual label suffix, firmware and accessories; do not assume licenses or modules are included.
Video, monitoring and control
- Video and high frame rates
- HDMI and 12G-SDI support UHD up to 2160/60p depending on format. There are two 3G-SDI outputs; 1080/119.88p or 1080/100p uses both, with no 12G-SDI output, or compatible HDMI. Define the slow-motion system separately.
- Network and fiber
- LAN carries control and IP video; RS-422 is a separate control connector and must not receive PoE. SFP+ supports fiber SDI or ST 2110 depending on mode and module. Uncompressed ST 2110 is HD; JPEG XS can carry UHD with compatible firmware and AW-SFU60 activation.
- Power and audio
- External 12 V DC or PoE++ IEEE 802.3bt over LAN. Distinguish the two XLR audio inputs from the power XLR. USB 3.0 HOST supports tethering with compatible routers rather than a direct USB webcam connection.
System requirements
A monitor, switcher, recorder or IP receiver supporting the selected output format. Check cabling, conversion, refresh rate and SDI A/B mode where applicable.
A suitable DC supply or camera-verified PoE++ equipment with sufficient per-port and total power budget. PoE and PoE+ do not equal PoE++.
A compatible controller and firmware, initial network account and conflict-free addresses. For fiber, check module and receiver against the manufacturer list and selected transport. ST 2110 also requires licensing, PTP synchronization and a network designed for the flow.
Basic preparation
- Confirm variant and versions. Install with the exact system’s support and retention hardware, room for motion and the correct Desktop/Hanging position. Remove the lens cap before preparing the picture.
- Plan power and connections before startup. When DC and PoE++ are connected together, DC takes priority: removing DC triggers a restart and interrupts video, rather than seamless transfer.
- Locate the camera using EasyIP Setup Tool Plus and configure the initial account for network control. Register it with the controller and check motion and presets off air.
- Choose frequency, format and function of each output, including 3G-SDI OUT2/PM. Distinguish main picture, crop, monitoring and return; check each actual destination.
- Set exposure, white balance and focus under event lighting. Save scenes and configuration before updates; review camera and controller release notes.
Three technical questions
Why is there no video through the SFP+ module?
First distinguish point-to-point fiber SDI from network ST 2110. Check mode, module, fiber, receiver and format. For ST 2110, verify activated AW-SFU60, PTP and flow configuration; inserting a module does not activate these features.
Panasonic requires MSA-compatible modules with MOD-DEF0 detection tied to ground. The list distinguishes SDI and ST 2110 modules: connector appearance or a forum report does not replace that validation.
Does the optical filter eliminate every moiré pattern on an LED wall?
The optical filter reduces moiré without guaranteeing removal at every distance, framing and content. Check the actual shot, focus and recorded detail, varying framing or position in a controlled way where the installation permits.
Distinguish spatial patterns from temporal bands or flicker. For the latter, compare camera and display refresh rates and shutter or Synchro Scan settings. A universal pitch/distance figure or shutter setting cannot guarantee freedom from all moiré.
Why does the controller detect the camera but fail to control it or adjust color?
Without an initial account, the controller can detect the camera but cannot control it. Check account, address, model registration and version compatibility. If only color adjustment fails, compare white balance mode and picture options available on the camera itself.
Save configuration and record the exact setting that does not respond. Review official notes before diagnosing a fault or updating: one user’s firmware fix does not identify the version required by another system.
Checks by symptom
| Symptom | Check | What it separates |
|---|---|---|
| Restart or no power | DC/PoE++, per-port and total power. | Power versus network. |
| SDI works, fiber does not | Mode, module, license and receiver. | Transport and compatibility. |
| Wrong output picture | OUT2/PM function, crop or return. | Assignment versus sensor. |
| Pattern against LED | Spatial moiré versus temporal bands. | Framing/focus versus timing. |
Limits and precautions
Operate between 0 and 40 °C, without condensation and with clear ventilation. Do not force the head or obstruct motion; follow Panasonic mounting and retention instructions.
Do not point at lasers or the sun. Camera settings do not establish optical exposure safety.
Preserve scenes and configuration before updating or resetting. A control test, web thumbnail or correct HDMI picture does not automatically verify all transports.
