Panasonic AK-UC4000: CCU, formats and color

Ask GLMedia about rental options for an event camera system. We review availability, configuration, and alternatives for your event.

Model and camera chain

With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.

AK-UC4000 is a 4K studio camera with a B4 mount for 2/3 lenses and production control. Preparation treats camera, lens, viewfinder, CCU, remote panel and destinations as a system.

Confirm camera and CCU suffixes. The current page identifies LEMO on AK-UC4000GSJ/AK-UC4000BGS and Tajimi on AK-UC4000GJ. The BGS variant does not power AK-HBU500; the abbreviated model name does not establish the available package.

Signal, control and auxiliary connections

Camera head
HD-SDI1 and HD-SDI2 provide HD signals with menu-selected functions. System 4K output is established through a suitable CCU, not any BNC on the head.
CCU and control
The camera connects to its CCU through the appropriate optical link. The 2022 manual covers UCU600; the current page includes UCU700/UCU710 with software and interface conditions. Verify the exact assembly compatibility and connectors.
Audio and auxiliary connections
MIC, intercom, return, DC and auxiliary connectors serve different purposes. The manual assigns G/L IN/PROMPTER OUT to reference input in standalone operation and prompter output with a CCU.

System requirements

Compatible B4 lens, viewfinder, support for the complete assembly, appropriate power and cabling; an identified CCU and ROP for studio operation. Do not assume IP cards, slow-motion functions or accessories are installed.

Define format, frame rate, selected output and color processing for every destination. ST 2110, Dante, NDI and SRT depend on the CCU and specified interfaces; a LAN connector on the head does not establish all these capabilities.

Basic preparation

  1. Record suffixes, firmware, CCU, ROP, lens and cards; preserve files and settings before making changes.
  2. Verify link type and power against the exact system manual. Check cable and optical status before treating a connection issue as a content problem.
  3. Under SYSTEM MODE, compare FORMAT with the CCU and destinations. The manual notes that FORMAT may be unavailable immediately after power-on while booting finishes.
  4. Check COLOR SETTING, HDR SW and each output processing path. Prepare a reference image and check destinations separately before applying broad camera corrections.
  5. Test video, return, tally, intercom and remote control. A picture in the viewfinder does not verify every system output and service.

Three technical questions

Can the camera head provide 4K through HD-SDI1 or HD-SDI2?

The head outputs are documented as HD, with 1080p, 1080i and 720p formats depending on configuration. For a 4K path, verify the CCU output, cards, format and destination.

Do not apply the system 12G-SDI/ST 2110 label to every camera connector. Confirm the actual path before choosing a cable, converter or recorder.

Why might LED, projection and recording show different colors?

Check the same signal on a reference and then each destination: HDR/SDR, colorimetry and output conversion must match the agreed format. Under SYSTEM MODE, HDR SW and the HDR settings for HD-SDI1 and HD-SDI2 are separate controls.

The manual fixes BT.709 under certain HD or SDR conditions. Do not copy temperature, matrix or saturation values from a forum; a global correction may change an already-correct recording.

An orange light is on and video is absent. Is that a unique fault code?

First identify the exact lamp, steady or flashing behavior and EXT/CCU power state. The manual distinguishes CALL, OPT and tally: for example, a flashing orange CALL lamp indicates excessive external DC-output loading. That does not make every orange lamp the same diagnosis.

For an optical error, the manual requires powering off camera and CCU before the prescribed connector intervention. Power and fiber checks must follow the system procedure; refer a persistent error for service.

Limits and precautions

External head power is nominal 12 V DC. CCU power uses the intended hybrid optical system; do not connect mains directly to the head based on a system specification table.

Do not service an energized optical connection. Follow camera, CCU and cable manuals for inspection and cleaning. Forum reports do not establish accessory loading, distance or power limits.

The online manual consulted is dated April 2022; the current product page includes other CCUs and upgrade conditions. Verify the actual combination before applying an older procedure or promising later functions.
