Magewell USB Capture SDI 4K Plus
Magewell USB Capture SDI 4K Plus: camera to computer
Troubleshoot SDI that works on a monitor but fails in a video call. Evaluate capture, connections, and software preparation with GLMedia.
Model and application
This is an external single-source SDI USB capture device, distinct from USB Capture Pro, Pro Capture PCIe, and network converters. Record serial number, hardware, firmware, operating system, and application version.
Connections and limits
- SDI
- SD/HD/3G/6G-SDI input and loop, up to 4096 × 2160 at 30 fps under documented conditions. It is not 12G 4K60 input or a universal camera RAW decoder.
- USB
- USB 3.0 with USB 2.0 compatibility; effective capture depends on bandwidth, pixel format, and application. Connector shape alone confirms neither speed nor sufficient power.
- Audio
- Embedded SDI audio and analog line connectors. Capture delivers up to two channels at 48 kHz; more embedded input channels do not mean all reach the application.
Preparation and troubleshooting
- Check model and revision in USB Capture Utility, USB port/cable, and detected signal. Connect directly to isolate a hub; do not update firmware speculatively during the show.
- Test a known SDI source, choose supported capture settings, and select video/audio in the application. Check system camera/microphone permissions and whether another application holds the device.
- Verify framing, aspect, levels, and sync in a test recording or call. Export diagnostic information if needed, preserving previous settings.
Show use and alternatives
We can evaluate adding an SDI camera to the event computer, including cabling, capture checks, application, audio, and platform rehearsal.
For program delivery without a computer, compare a dedicated encoder. For signals beyond 6G or another interface, study suitable conversion or capture. Start with a symptom clip and intended use.
Frequently asked questions
Does a correct loop image prove correct application capture?
No. Loop and USB capture are different routes. Check USB negotiation, requested format, and device selection as well as SDI input.
Why do I receive HD when the camera records 4K?
Check the actual SDI output; internal recording may differ. Then check input, USB capture, and platform limits; do not treat RAW as ordinary SDI video.
Can I capture 4K60 because the name includes 4K?
No. Plus documents 4K up to 30 fps; do not transfer capabilities from Pro or PCIe models.
Do I need a special driver?
The family is presented as driver-free for standard capture. Confirm system and application support; USB Capture Utility provides settings and diagnostics, not guaranteed support for every new release.
What should I check for stretched pictures or bars?
Compare detected signal, crop, and aspect settings in capture and application. Try another source/cable before forcing settings; retain the previous value and check the full result.
Why is there picture but no speech?
Check embedded versus line audio, selected channels, audio device, permissions, and mute. Listen to a recording; an SDI meter does not prove the call’s selected source.
