Stages and drape

Tiered pyramid stage: concentric circles or stepped squares

Plan a fixed stepped stage with progressively smaller circular or square levels, including support paths, usable tiers and access.

Define the stepped arrangement

Ask GLMedia about rental options for your event. The proposal is subject to availability, confirmation of the model and configuration, and the venue’s technical requirements.

Here, pyramid means a stepped arrangement with a broad base and successively smaller upper platforms. It can use concentric circles or nested squares. It does not mean an inclined pyramid, a roof or an instruction to stack decks on top of one another.

Define whether each level carries people, furniture, instruments or display objects. A display pedestal and an occupied performance platform require different project briefs.

Levels, setbacks and usable area

Levels
Label each level and record its outside diameter or side length, finished elevation and intended activity.
Exposed tier width
For centred circles, radial width equals half the difference between adjacent diameters. For centred squares, the straight-side setback equals half the difference between side lengths. This is geometry, not a compliant stair dimension.
Area
Separate the central upper platform from each exposed surrounding tier. Do not add the full areas of overlapping levels and call the result usable floor space.

Neither a wide base nor the appearance of a pyramid establishes stability or capacity. The project must show how loads at every level reach the venue floor, including any connections between levels.

Supports and access at every level

Prepare dimensioned plan and section drawings, a numbered component schedule, supports, bracing, connections and edge treatment for every level. Use independent supports or an engineered inter-level system as specified in the actual design.

Do not place an upper deck’s feet on a lower deck merely because it appears to fit. Any load transfer through another platform requires a documented arrangement covering the receiving deck, contact loads, restraint and the underlying support system.

Provide designated access to occupied levels, landings and applicable handrails or guards. Keep decorative setbacks distinct from the walking route. Coordinate finishes and lighting so changes of level remain visible.

Checks before use

  1. Choose circular or square geometry and define activity at each level before setting dimensions.
  2. Record all levels and heights in a single plan and section; coordinate equipment, circulation and the venue’s accessible route.
  3. Compare each support and connection with the project documents before concealing the structure. Resolve missing support details or uncertain load paths before release.
  4. After acceptance, rehearse only the approved route and activity. Reassess changes in choreography, furniture, concentrated equipment or public access.

Three technical questions

Can the circular diameters in this series be used as pyramid tiers?

They can describe a proposed layout, but they do not establish a compatible kit. Select the intended levels and heights, then obtain the exact deck, support and connection design. Do not infer a buildable stack from the list of diameters.

Can performers climb every exposed tier?

An exposed ledge is not automatically a stair. Record the clear width, rise, route and intended users; have the responsible designer resolve access and protection for each transition. A scenic step must not be treated as public access without that review.

Does total area equal the sum of all complete platforms?

No. In plan, upper levels overlap lower ones. Count the usable exposed areas separately, then allow for equipment and circulation. No area calculation establishes load capacity or permitted occupancy.

Conditions for use

Do not improvise stacking, spacers, loose blocks or ballast. Keep an unresolved assembly closed to use until the responsible designer provides the required support and restraint details.

This guide describes a fixed stepped arrangement. Rotation, occupied movement, dancing and outdoor installation need their own documented assessment.
