Blackmagic Video Assist 7-inch 12G HDR

Video Assist 7-inch 12G HDR: signal, media, and recording

Ask GLMedia about rental options for event recording and monitoring. We review availability, configuration, and alternatives for your event.

Model and use

With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.

This guide covers Blackmagic Video Assist 7-inch 12G HDR, combining monitoring, scopes, and external recording. Identify the 12G HDR version: the 3G model and older Video Assist 4K have different capabilities.

ProRes or DNx recording from a video signal and Blackmagic RAW recording are different paths. RAW requires a supported camera and output, with compatible versions and settings.

Video, audio, and control

Video
SDI and HDMI inputs and outputs. Match Source to the connected cable and check the format reported by the recorder; a camera picture does not confirm recording.
Media and USB
Two UHS-II SD slots and external USB-C drive recording. The USB port also provides webcam output; plan that use before allocating it to an SSD.
Audio and control
Mini XLR inputs, embedded audio, and headphones. The 2.5mm LANC port supports start/stop with a compatible controller; video and timecode triggering are also available.

What to prepare

Prepare source, format, codec, expected duration, media identified by model/capacity, and audio path. Include a suitable data cable and power supply.

Share what you need to record: a camera, switcher program, or supported RAW output. We can help map connections before the final system is settled.

Basic preparation

  1. Confirm model and software. Connect the specified power and video to the correct input; select Source and verify picture and format.
  2. Choose codec and quality for delivery. For RAW, check camera, output, and versions against the official compatibility list before configuring the signal.
  3. Check media against manufacturer recommendations for that format. Back up content before formatting; verify capacity and sustained recording.
  4. Check embedded audio or XLR assignment, LINE/MIC, and levels. Listen through headphones and play back a file sample.
  5. Test manual recording first. Then set Trigger Record to Video start/stop or Timecode Run only if the camera provides the intended trigger.
  6. Check If Card Drops Frame: stop recording or alert. An alert requires checking media, cable, and format; inspect the file and rehearse the expected duration.

Three technical questions

Why does recording stop or show an alert?

Check dropped-frame warnings, If Card Drops Frame, and the media in use. Capacity and advertised peak speed do not establish sustained writing at that codec.

Check exact media model and capacity, USB-C cable, and format. Test a recommended combination and inspect the file before proceeding; disabling warnings does not make the test pass.

Why does it record by itself or ignore the camera button?

Separate manual recording from triggering. Video start/stop requires the camera to send the command over the connection in use.

Timecode Run starts when incoming timecode runs. Free run or continuous clock timecode can keep triggering recording; use record run where appropriate and test start and stop.

Why is there a picture but no Blackmagic RAW recording?

A conventional video signal does not become RAW when you select the codec. Check exact camera, RAW output, format, and compatible versions.

For a conventional signal, prepare ProRes or DNx for the job. Also check the camera output is clear of menus: those graphics can be recorded.

Checks by symptom

Unexpected triggerTrigger and timecode behavior.Automation or manual control.
Wrong audioEmbedded/XLR, assignment, and file listening.Source, routing, or level.

Limits and precautions

Formatting erases media. Back up and confirm the correct card or drive before approving.

Enable phantom power only for microphones requiring and supporting it. Review LINE/MIC and assignment when changing sources; settings may remain stored.

HDMI input cannot capture HDCP-protected signals. Prepare an authorized, compatible source; do not bypass protection.

A monitoring LUT and a file-associated LUT are separate choices. For Blackmagic RAW, Apply LUT in File stores the LUT in metadata and it can be disabled in postproduction.
