Blackmagic SDI Expander 8x12G

Blackmagic SDI Expander 8x12G: convert SDI and IP both ways

Ask GLMedia about rental options for an IP audiovisual system. We review availability, configuration, and alternatives for your event.

Model and use

With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.

SDI Expander 8x12G converts eight SDI signals to SMPTE-2110 and eight separate IP signals to SDI simultaneously. It is neither a switcher nor a recorder.

We can help retain SDI sources within IP production. Start with an input and return map to choose the complete path.

Inputs, outputs, and control

SDI
Connect source outputs to expander inputs. Expander outputs feed receivers or returns; identify both directions.
IP video
The 100G pair carries video with SMPTE 2022-7 redundancy. Do not count it as two independent channel sets.
Control and monitoring
Separate NMOS control and USB-C configuration from video links. Use monitoring to inspect the selected source and audio.

What to prepare

Share planned cameras, receivers, formats, and returns. We can prepare the diagram before all network equipment is selected.

Gather each endpoint’s model and version, modules, and cables. Assign coordination of clocking, routing, and picture/audio tests.

Basic preparation

  1. Identify SDI Expander 8x12G and firmware. Preserve configuration before changing routes.
  2. Label each source and connect it to the corresponding SDI input. Compare received signal and expected format.
  3. Prepare IP connection and reference around topology. On a networked system, check selected source and receiver for every stream.
  4. Assign the correct incoming stream to an SDI output and check the receiver. For 3G-SDI, verify level A or B against the destination device.
  5. For camera return, connect the planned SDI output to that camera’s input and test supported functions.
  6. Test both directions with identifiable audio and inspect the final destination. Rehearse backup outside operation and preserve the working map.

Three technical questions

Why does SDI-to-IP work but camera return does not?

Prepare each direction separately. Check which stream the expander receives, which SDI output carries it, and whether it reaches the camera input.

The manual demonstrates return with compatible Blackmagic cameras. Identify the system before relying on control, tally, or talkback.

What if a 3G-SDI receiver shows no picture?

Compare format and cabling and check whether the receiver requires level A or B. The manual permits output type selection per channel.

Test only the affected output and record results before changing other channels. Preserve the previous setting.

Does connecting the expander record or mix cameras?

The expander converts and transports signals. Define the switcher or recorder separately, including its assigned inputs or streams.

We can organize production, recording, or both around the sources and destinations you need.

Limits and precautions

Verify modules, cables, and power against exact equipment documentation. Keep ventilation clear and connections labeled.

Test redundancy and recovery with the prepared system. Do not remove links during production to discover its response.

Preserve configuration and media before updates. Tests must include the models and formats planned for the event.
