Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Plus
HyperDeck Studio HD Plus: input, codec, and recording

Model and use
With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.
Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Plus is a video recorder and player for camera or program signals. It can record a system output and play prepared event clips.
Despite HD in its name, it supports ProRes up to 2160p30. This is the Plus variant with 6G-SDI; Studio 4K Pro capabilities and HD Pro internal drive bays do not apply.
Signal, formats, and media
- Video
- Selectable SDI and HDMI 2.0 inputs. SDI A/B and HDMI outputs; a separate 3G-SDI monitoring output with overlays. Distinguish monitoring from the signal being delivered to the system.
- Formats
- ProRes HQ, 422, LT, and Proxy up to 2160p30; H.264 up to 1080p60. ProRes 4444 is playback only, with fill/key over SDI A/B up to 1080p60. Ultra HD fill/key is unavailable.
- Media and control
- 2 UHS-I/UHS-II SD slots and external USB-C recording. 1 Gb/s Ethernet and RS-422 control. Embedded audio: 16 SDI channels and 8 HDMI channels.
What to prepare
A supported input, suitable cabling, and manufacturer-approved media for the chosen format and codec. A card’s advertised speed does not replace this check.
A monitor and audio monitoring to inspect the file; sufficient space and planned duration. For critical recordings, plan a backup path and rehearse recovery.
Basic preparation
- Identify the variant and note firmware, input, resolution, frame rate, codec, and media before rehearsal.
- Select SDI or HDMI in Record > Input or with the Input button. Check clean video and embedded audio at the source.
- Choose a supported codec: ProRes up to 2160p30; H.264 up to 1080p60.
- Check media against the official list. If formatting is required, back up its contents and identify the exact medium: formatting erases files. exFAT works with Mac/Windows; HFS+ is native on Mac.
- Record a sample, stop, and play it back. Listen to audio, check duration, and inspect the file in the delivery workflow before the event.
Three technical questions
Why is there no input picture, or why can’t I record?
Compare the SDI/HDMI selection and actual source format with the formats supported by HD Plus. A connected cable does not confirm that the right input is selected.
The HDMI input cannot capture copy-protected sources. Also check that the camera sends clean video: its graphics can be recorded.
What should I check if REC flashes or frames are dropped?
The manual associates this warning with media or network speed problems. Note codec, format, media, and warning before changing settings.
Check the exact media model and capacity against the official list for that mode. Test the entire chain; one successful short test does not establish that a freeze is resolved.
Can I play a transparent file as fill/key?
HD Plus plays ProRes 4444 with fill and key over SDI A/B up to 1080p60. This does not provide ProRes 4444 recording or Ultra HD fill/key.
Prepare a compatible file and check picture and key separately on the receiving switcher. A file opening on a computer does not establish deck compatibility.
Checks by symptom
| Symptom | Check | What it helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| No picture | Selected input and source format. | Input selection versus unsupported signal. |
| REC flashes | Mode, approved media, and path speed. | Recording versus a throughput bottleneck. |
| No transparency | ProRes 4444, A/B outputs, and receiver settings. | File versus key routing. |
Limits and precautions
Do not remove media or interrupt power during recording. Stop and check the file before moving it.
Do not assume the deck converts every incoming signal to any format. Check source, mode, and receiver as a chain.
Record the version before updating and rehearse outside the event. User reports do not establish a cause or justify an undocumented firmware change.
