ATEM 4 M/E Constellation 4K: program, multiview and audio

Ask GLMedia about rental options for live switching and image distribution. We review availability, configuration, and alternatives for your event.

Model and scope

With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.

ATEM 4 M/E Constellation 4K is an HD and Ultra HD multicamera switcher with four mix/effects banks. It includes composition, keyers and two SuperSource processors for programs and source layouts.

This guide covers the original 40-input model. Plus, Constellation HD, 8K and IP have different connections and limits. External panels, recorders, converters and monitors are specified separately.

Video, monitoring and control

Video
Forty 12G-SDI inputs with format conversion and re-sync. Twenty-four assignable auxiliary outputs and four SDI multiview outputs total 28 outputs. The production standard supports up to 2160p60 within the documented modes.
Monitoring and USB
Multiviews allow HD or Ultra HD selection according to settings. There is no direct HDMI multiview: HDMI monitors need compatible conversion. USB-C provides webcam output at 720p or 1080p at the supported program frame rate.
Audio, reference and control
Balanced analog audio, MADI, SDI audio and talkback have distinct paths. REF IN accepts tri-sync or black burst; Ethernet connects control and compatible panels. Similar-looking talkback and control connectors are not interchangeable.

System requirements

Sources, SDI cables and receivers compatible with the chosen standard. Input conversion does not mean each auxiliary output supports an arbitrary independent resolution.

ATEM Software Control and panels compatible with switcher firmware. Record versions before planning audio mapping, multiview or HD downconversion.

A ventilated 2 RU installation with manufacturer-specified AC power. The unit has two internal supplies; plan system connections and power continuity without improvised adapters.

Basic preparation

  1. Confirm unit label and version, sources, monitors, converters and every output destination. Preserve configuration and media before changing the system.
  2. Choose Video Standard and verify inputs on multiview. Changing the standard erases frames loaded in the Media Pool; prepare to restore them before making the change.
  3. Assign program, preview or a source to each auxiliary output. Set the multiview standard for the monitor and check the complete SDI/converter/HDMI path.
  4. For an HD feed within UHD production, current documentation allows Down convert to HD under Output 24 resolution. Verify that installed software exposes it; do not assume independent conversion on every output.
  5. Check the mix, On/Off/AFV, channel mapping and recorder settings. Test picture and audio at the actual receiver before handing off program.

Three technical questions

Why does multiview lose picture while program works?

Compare multiview format and frame rate with monitor and converter support. Also verify SDI Level A/B where applicable, conversion direction and suitable cable.

Check a known receiver and path, changing one variable at a time. A converter stabilizing the picture does not by itself establish a switcher fault or complete UHD path compatibility.

Why does an auxiliary output show the right source with different audio?

Video assignment and embedded audio mapping are separate controls. In the consulted guide, program mix occupies channels 1 and 2, engineering talkback 13 and 14, and production talkback 15 and 16. Other channels can be mapped according to model options.

Review the Audio menu and the channels the receiver accepts or records. Selecting a camera on an output does not automatically preserve all its original audio channels or create an independent mix per output.

Can it generate a custom panoramic canvas for two projectors?

The switcher uses documented video standards. Its HD/UHD format list does not constitute a custom output canvas or edge-blending processor.

Define final resolution, crop, overlap and geometry in a presentation or projection system that handles them. Check every device’s supported format before planning a composition that crosses the seam.

Limits and precautions

Operating environment: 0–40 °C without condensation. Maintain ventilation and rack support suitable for the unit and cabling.

Re-sync and conversion do not guarantee fixed end-to-end latency. Check picture, audio and timing across the complete path.

Save configuration before updating or resetting. Check functions against installed software and avoid applying Plus, HD or 8K settings to the original model.
