This guide covers the full-size X32. Compact, Rack and Producer have different physical connections. Record firmware and the exact expansion card before planning recording or playback.
Connections and required equipment
Input socket or card return → channel → bus → output source/tap → local XLR or AES50 transmit → compatible stagebox socket. Remote-control Ethernet is a separate connection.
Prepare the system
- Export the current scene and preserve a separate original copy; review recall safes/scope for the installed firmware.
- Identify clock leader, stagebox ports and installed card.
- For recording, trace Card sends to armed DAW tracks; for playback, trace DAW outputs to Card returns. The front USB recorder is separate.
Questions and troubleshooting
A local microphone or computer return does not reach its channel.
The channel number need not match the physical input.
- Compare the selected channel source with Local, AES50 or Card routing and input meters. For AES50, verify stable sync first; for Card, verify installed interface, computer device and return assignment.
- Test one known source at protected level. Restore the intended live source after playback testing. If absent, record source, map, firmware and card for support; do not initialize the scene.
A bus meters, but the stage output is silent.
Trace each routing stage to the exact rack connector.
- Check bus source and output tap, then AES50 transmit bank/port and rack receive mapping. Local XLR assignments do not by themselves prove the stagebox route.
- Verify the intended outlet at protected level and preserve a before/after map. If still silent, record both-end sync and routing; avoid copying another rack’s output offset.
Monitor level ignores the expected fader.
There are two different tap decisions.
- Select the intended bus and Sends on Faders to inspect channel contributions. Confirm channel-to-bus pre/post tap separately from the bus-to-output tap; check mute and DCA/group influence.
- If bus-master control is intended, verify an appropriate post-fader output tap against the installed manual. Test safely and exit Sends on Faders before returning to main mixing; no live reset or blind scene recall.
Choose the next check
| Observation | Next check | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Silent input | Source/return/sync | Channel and input map |
| Silent stage outlet | Bus/output/AES50/rack | Exact connector |
| Unexpected monitor level | Send tap/output tap | Selected bus and controls |
Precautions
- Use prescribed shielded AES50 cabling; do not insert an ordinary Ethernet switch.
- Protect speakers and hearing before patching or playback.
- Do not assume X-USB, X-LIVE or Dante cards provide identical recording functions.
