Atomos Ninja RAW

Atomos Ninja RAW: HDMI, media, and camera control

Ask GLMedia about rental options for event recording and monitoring. We review availability, configuration, and alternatives for your event.

Model and use

With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.

Ninja RAW is an HDMI monitor-recorder with a 5.2-inch display and stated 1500-nit brightness. It is a distinct model; identify the label before applying another Ninja’s accessories or instructions.

It supports ProRes RAW up to 6Kp30 from compatible cameras, alongside other video codecs. Recorder limits do not establish a camera’s output format or editor compatibility.

Video, audio, and control

HDMI
HDMI 2.0 input and output. Camera video arrives over HDMI; prepare resolution, frame rate, and clean output for delivery. This model has no built-in SDI.
USB-C and power
Separate data/control ports from the PD power input. NP-F batteries and documented adaptors are also supported; a USB-C cable does not establish power or function.
Storage and audio
Records to compatible CFexpress Type B or USB-C storage. Separate mic/line input and headphone output are provided; check source and channels in the file.

What to prepare

Identify camera, firmware, codec, resolution, and duration. Prepare media by model and capacity, reader, data cable, and verified power.

Share what you need to control from the screen and what to record. We can map the paths while the camera setup is still being finalized.

Basic preparation

  1. Confirm Ninja RAW and installed firmware. Check the model’s support section; the accessed page lists AtomOS 12.7.3, which does not establish your unit’s version.
  2. Connect documented power and camera HDMI to the input. Verify signal and format before enabling recording or remote control.
  3. Check camera support for ProRes RAW and, separately, USB-C control. Prepare its connection mode using manufacturer instructions and test supported functions.
  4. Choose certified CFexpress Type B or USB-C storage for the workflow. Back up before formatting and test sustained writing and playback.
  5. Test manual recording, then camera-triggered recording. Verify external files and any required internal camera recording separately.
  6. Listen to audio, check focus and exposure with monitoring tools, and open a sample in the planned editing application.

Three technical questions

Why is there a picture but no camera control?

HDMI can carry a picture while control needs another connection and compatibility. Check exact camera, versions, port, data cable, and USB mode.

Test ISO, shutter, aperture, or focus only where supported. A camera-control listing does not establish every autofocus mode or RAW output.

Does the record button also control internal camera recording?

Separate the trigger sent from camera to recorder from commands a camera may accept over USB. Test control direction, camera mode, and installed media in each device.

Check indicators and files at both destinations. Do not plan internal triggering without external media or continuous AF-C from another monitor’s behavior.

What should I check if media is not recognized or recording cannot be sustained?

Check card type, model, capacity, and firmware against compatibility resources. A CFexpress Type A card does not belong in the Type B slot.

For USB storage, check port, data cable, and system power. Test the intended format and playback before assigning it to an event.

Limits and precautions

Keep ventilation clear, mounting secure, and cables free of tension. Use documented power and verify the PD source and cable before operation.

Formatting and firmware changes require backup and preparation. Do not use another model’s update files or old forum download links.

Test the codec in the destination editor before confirming delivery. ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW are different formats; support for one does not establish the other.
